Introverts behave online——WebtrovertsThesis & FMP
The Internet is the result of technological development, and its emergence breaks the boundaries of time and space so that people could communicate with each other without face-to-face. Henderson and Zimbardo(1998) believe that the degree of introversion is generally increased due to the improvement and progress of information and communication technology, and it will cause the decrease of face-to-face communication and daily contact. the rise of social media will undoubtedly save the introverted personality. Internet communication is likely to replace the face-to-face communication, it provides social compensation and people in the network do not have to hold the face-to-face communication social skills when they communicate online. Jones and Carpenter (1986) compared introverts with extroverted individuals, they found introverts lack social support, their social communication circle is relatively smaller, and their offline contacts always out of the passive state in the long-term. The study found that those who lack strong and steady relationships will choose to seek it from the network(McKenna & Bargh, 1998). The anonymity of the Internet, the self-mastery of communication, and the ability to overcome physical distress are very attractive to the introverts (McKenna & Bargh, 2000). Someone who is a shy introvert in real life, but turns into a full-on extroverted party animal on Internet forums and social sites.
Also, there are different type of Introverted personality, I sum them up, and they also behave differently when they communicating with others.
I sum up some characteristics of Social Media and get four aspects which encouraged Introverts would like to participate in social activities, but there is some negative influence of this. Finally, I decided to choose one of these aspects——“do not need any social skills” and “control the progress of communication” to develop my design.
